15.07.2010
British Soul Singer, Sade, R&B boyband, Damage and Jazz musician, Courtney Pine are amongst the list of honorary award recipients announced at the press launch for the 8th annual Urban Music Awards 2010 at the prestigious Tuatara in Chelsea.
Last night saw the official press launch for the 8th annual Urban Music Awards hosted by Andy Abraham & Rachael White.
R&B boyband Damage, were announced as the official recipients of the Outstanding Contribution Award 2010 for their efforts in pioneering the UK urban music scene in the nineties paving the way for acts such as Another Level, Blue, and now JLS. The boyband who had top chart hits including; Ghetto Romance, Forever, What if I and Since you’ve been gone also announced exclusively at the UMA press launch that they had decided to reform this year since splitting up in 2001 and will be celebrating their hits and collecting their award at the UMA’s in September.
The R&B outfit, which includes Emma Bunton's boyfriend Jade Jones said “Special thanks to the Urban Music Awards for honouring us with this prestigious award. We have been in the music industry for several years and have never felt so honoured like we have felt today at the UMA press launch so thanks to the Urban Music Awards and we are really looking forward to the awards show on the 18th of September 2010”.
Jazz musician, Courtney Pine CBE was announced as recipient of the UMA Living legend award whilst British soul legend, Sade best known for being one of the first British soul singers to achieve great success in the eighties is to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jordan Kensington, founder of the Urban Music Awards said “Inorder to move forward we have to pay homage and show gratitude to the artists that have paved the way for the success currently being celebrating here in the UK and internationally ” He added “ Jazzie B(Soul 2 Soul), Maxi Priest, Ali Campbell (UB40) , Mica Paris, Beverley Knight, Gabrielle are previous recipients who achieved great success at a time were it was almost deemed impossible for British born acts to receive that level of international penetration with their music. The young musicians coming out today need to pay homage to the work done by these acts in the past to break barriers and open doors. Damage and Sade are perfect examples of two musicians who broke barriers in the UK and internationally and we are excited to honour them this year”
The Urban Music Awards 2010 press launch panel also featured double nominee DJ Swerve from radio station Kiss 100 who added “ I was at the Urban Music Awards last year and it was fantastic. I have always supported the Urban Music Awards and would continue to support the work of the awards show as it is essential in it’s efforts to promote our music to an international audience”. The DJ who is also nominated for ‘Best Radio Show’ and ‘Best DJ’ thanked all fans for their continuous support and spoke about his excitement at the Damage re-union at the Urban Music Awards in September.

The Urban Music Awards was launched in 2003 at a time when there was no support for the UK music scene. Undeterred by the lack of support. The UMA’s invested millions in the UK urban music scene, celebrating, awarding, nurturing, and encouraging artists who have become household names today. The UMA’s listened to music fans from as far back as 1999 with its specialist magazine and launched the UMA’s in 2003 making sure all nominees were voted for by music fans nationwide. It became the 1st ever awards show in the UK to award 100% of all 23 categories to strictly British acts. This led to several multi-faceted sponsorship deals with brands such as; Samsung Mobile, Timberland, Footlocker, Kickers, MAC Cosmetics, Wella Professionals and many more to strengthen the UK Urban Music scene. The UMA’s did not stop there, the awards show became the 1st ever British based awards show to launch a US version with the Urban Music Awards USA in New York city in 2007!
To celebrate the recent success of UK urban music; The 2010 UMA awards show will be in cooperating one of the biggest European collaborations of all time. A record 6 categories were thrown open to commercial/popular urban and dance acts in France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the rest of Europe to be nominated making it a truly European event and finally setting a new precedent by bridging the gap between our UK artists and European counterparts to engage and commence working together to achieve far more success across different European territories. As a result the UMA’s 2010 will be syndicated for broadcast in over 7 countries in Europe with a potential audience access of over 48 million music fans worldwide and this will follow the launch of the UMA 2010 compilation album featuring a mix of talent from Europe.
